Somerlus Cottage was built in the late 1800s as a summer retreat. The original house, (now the dining room) was built from 30cm wide Yellow wood boards when it was still a common construction material (the boards can be seen in the image bellow, and in on the stoep of the house today). Rooms were added over the years with most of the materials ferried over the river where it was brought to from Riversdale by ox-wagon.
A minute or so’s walk from both the fishing harbour and the river mouth.
The cottage sleeps 6 people in comfort but can accommodate up to 8
Across the river there is a four mile long sandy beach; the Goukou river itself is negotiable 15 or so km upstream – and the rocky coast other side of the harbour is famous for excellent surfing and angling!
